Alvin and the Street Fighters

25May08

Hollywood has successfully ruined loads of classic television shows, videogames… everything – of any age, really. That’s what always strikes me as odd about hollywood. They not only ruin television shows… but they ruin film concepts that would have been fantastic (Donnie Darko 2), and then, as if it wasn’t bad enough the first round, they go back and re-ruin what they ruined in the first place… with a sequel. It’s been announced that they’re coming out with a sequel to Alvin and the Chipmunks. Yes – They are actually going that far.  ” But the film, which will be a co-production between Fox 2000 and New Regency, has no script yet. Furthermore, executives haven’t settled on a concept for the sequel” (www.variety.com). Now that’s a real brain buster – When have hollywood execs EVER been concerned with the plot of a movie? “Hey, yeah… We need to make some money… Got any ideas?”, “Oh, how about we just throw some snakes on a plane and get a celeb or two to be in it… That’s bound to make some sort of profit” – See how easy that was? Or how about “Oh hey, I’ve got a great idea! Let’s make a hollywood version of that classic Speed Racer cartoon! Yeah! And let’s completely replace the plot so it has absolutely nothing to do with the show at all! Yes!” – Ridiculous. Anyway, the film is set to be out in 2010… For the three people in the world who actually still care. Click here for more info for what I hope is just a rumor.

On a further note, the same studio (Fox) is also setting to release a “bigscreen adaptation” of the video game “Street Fighter” – Interesting, their term of “bigscreen adaptation” usually translates to literally mean “absolutely nothing like the original”. I’m not sure how it will turn out – I honestly didn’t mind the pervious Street Fighter film, it wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible either… But, we all know hollywood execs have a great talent for completely screwing things up. Funny how things work in hollywood. For now, let’s just watch Ken Masters blow away (in hopeful terms, really) the “new and improved” Alvin and the Chipmunks.
